Water

Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water because sometimes, just from the environment, the fluoride level gets too high and that is not healthy for us. Also, people have heard and have evidence that fluoride can cause damage to your brain, and can also cause some bone cancers. Having to much fluoride in water is especially damaging to infants, because it causes the enamel on your teeth to rot. Another problem with having too much fluoride is that is lowers the IQ of young children.

My position would be that I think that if they, being the people who add fluoride in the water, just put a little bit of fluoride into our water it would be alright. I think this because it does help our teeth from decaying but it is really not healthy if there is too much.

Crest Toothpaste

Some technology advances that had to occur would be that people had to find which abrasive would work the best with fluoride. They had to do this because the trick to putting fluoride in toothpaste is marrying it with an abrasive. Procter & Gamble was the first company to find a fluoride-abrasive combination that worked, they paired stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. They launched this formula in 1955 as Crest, and proceeded to dominate the fluoride toothpaste market for the next 10 years. The next dental fluoride breakthrough, MFP,was already in the works. Ozark had discovered the compound in 1949 and by the early 1960s was selling it to toothpaste makers overseas. MFP really took off in 1967 when Colgate-Palmolive first launched Colgate with MFP, providing new competition for Crest and cementing fluoridated toothpaste as the marketplace standard.

My biggest concern about adding fluoride to water would be that the enamel on my teeth would be damaged if there was too much fluoride in the water. It is also just generally unhealthy if there is too much fluoride in the water. After research, I found that too much fluoride can damage your brain and possibly raise your chance of getting a bone cancer. This, in a way, scared me because I’m too young to be getting brain damage or cancer. I think that if the government would not put very much fluoride in the water, everyone would be alright.
